You can manage the Media Library in WordPress with a few simple steps. An organized library will let you find what you need more quickly.
In this blog, we’ll explore the types of media and their respective formats you can upload. We’ll cover how you can upload files to the Media Library and how you can download them. Plus, we’ll learn simple edits you can make to images directly using the functionality of the Media Library. With that said, let’s get started!
The WordPress Media Library is the place where all of your website’s media files are kept. Media files can be images, videos, documents, or audio. From the Media Library, you can:
The best part? Upload once, use anywhere – no need to keep re-uploading the same files.
WordPress allows you to upload and manage various file types in the Media Library, including:
Images | Video Files | Audio Files | Documents |
.jpg | .mp4 | .mp3 | |
.png | .mov | .m4a | .doc |
.gif | .wmv | .ogg | .ppt |
.ico | .avi | .wav | .pps |

What if you need to upload an unsupported format? You can use a plugin like ‘File Upload Types by WPForms‘ to expand compatibility.
File upload to the WordPress Media Library is a simple process. It allows you to store and manage all your media files in a single location. Upload your files using the below steps.
Open your browser and enter your website admin URL, such as yourdomain.com/wp-admin. Login using your username and password to open the WordPress admin dashboard. It is where you control everything on your site.
On the left-hand menu, locate the Media option. Click on it, and then choose Library. This will launch the Media Library, where all your uploaded files are kept. You can view thumbnails of images, videos, or other files you’ve added previously.
Find the Add New Media Files button at the top of the Media Library page. Click on it to begin uploading. You will have a section where you can drag and drop your files. Alternatively, click Select Files to look for files you want to upload.
Go to the folder where your files are saved. Select one or more files and click Open. WordPress will begin uploading them right away. You’ll see a progress bar showing how much time is left.
Once the upload is finished, you can then edit the file information if necessary. Click on the uploaded file in the Media Library. There will be a panel on the right-hand side. Here you can insert a title, caption, alt text, and description. This information supports SEO in WordPress and makes your files easier to locate later.
Go to the editor where you’re working. Click the ‘Add Media’ button above the editor. Find the file in the Media Library and select it. Tap on Insert into Post/Page to add it to your content.
Downloading a file from the WordPress Media Library makes you able to save your media file on your own computer. Here are the steps you can follow to do so.
Navigate to Media > Library in the admin dashboard. It will display all your uploaded files in Grid View (thumbnails) or List View (detailed list).
You can search for the file using the search bar (if you know the filename). Or you may sort files by type (images, documents, etc.) using the dropdown menu.
Double click on the file (in Grid View) or press ‘Edit’ (in List View). It will launch the ‘Attachment Details’ popup.
Search for the ‘Download’ button (most often located close to the file URL). If nothing shows, right-click the file preview and choose ‘Save image as…’ (in case of images) or copy the file URL and download it manually.
Choose a location on your computer (e.g., Downloads folder) and click ‘Save’ to complete the download.
WordPress has basic image editing tools. Using them, you can crop, rotate, scale, and flip images. You can follow the below steps to edit images directly in your Media Library.
Click Media and then select Library. It will display all the images and other files you’ve uploaded to your WordPress site. After that, find the image you want to edit.
Click on the image thumbnail to open the ‘Attachment Details’ popup. You will find the ‘Edit Image’ button below the preview.
The media library allows you to make the following edits:
This basic option lets you edit images without using other tools.
Click ‘Save’ to apply edits (creates a new version). It will update the changes (the original image will be kept in the library).
